Chemotherapie bij kanker, zo blijkt uit veel onderzoek, gaat gepaard met een verminderde lichamelijke conditie, verminderde belastbaarheid bij lichamelijke inspanning, verminderde spierkracht en een toename in (het gevoel van) vermoeidheid.2,3) De resultaten van onderzoek wijzen in toenemende mate in de richting dat lichamelijke activiteit en interventieprogramma’s die zijn gericht op lichamelijke beweging gedurende de chemotherapie, kunnen bijdragen aan de verbetering van: i) cardiorespiratoire fitness (vermogen van de bloedsomloop en ademhaling om zuurstof te leveren aan skeletspieren)411), ii) kracht10,12,13), iii) afnemende vermoeidheid10,11,1416), iv) stemmingsstoornissen10,11,15,16). Echter, de resultaten uit deze studies zijn, mogelijk door methodologische beperkingen, niet consistent14,15,17), omdat: i) veel onderzoeken gebaseerd zijn op kleine aantallen patiënten, ii) sommige geen controlegroep hebben, iii) de samenstelling van de interventies sterk van elkaar verschillen. Desalniettemin menen deze onderzoekers voldoende grond te hebben om de invloed van bewegingsprogramma’s op fitness tijdens en na de chemotherapie in een goedgecontroleerde studie te willen onderzoeken waarbij zij hoge eisen stellen aan de operationele definitie van de interventies (onafhankelijke variabele) en de validiteit en betrouwbaarheid van de meetinstrumenten (afhankelijke variabelen) om het effect van de interventies vast te stellen.
